Books and creators by actually autistic authors — share your favorites
Posted May 10, 2026
I want a thread we can come back to. Books, blogs, YouTube channels, Substacks, podcasts — by autistic creators, not just about autism.
The shift in our family started when we stopped reading parent memoirs about autism and started reading autistic adults writing about their own lives. Different framing, different priorities, different advice. Worth its weight in gold.
A few that have been important to us (no affiliation, just gratitude):
- Books written by autistic adults reflecting on childhood and what they wish caregivers had understood.
- Essays by late-diagnosed adults on masking, burnout, and unmasking.
- Children's books with autistic main characters written by autistic authors.
- Creators on social media who share day-in-the-life content rather than "awareness" content.
I'm intentionally not naming specific titles in this seed post — I'd love this thread to be community-built. Drop your favorites: title/creator, format, who it's for (parents? autistic adults? kids? educators?), and one line on why it mattered.
