ELL (English Language Learner)
A student whose first language is not English and who is learning English in school. The current preferred term across Canadian provinces and many other systems; also seen as ESL (English as a Second Language). Overlapping ELL and additional-needs identification can complicate assessment, so parents sometimes need to advocate for separate language and developmental support.
